Im building a coal forge at home. Lets take a look at starting a fire in a typical c.

Coal is a preferable heat source because it burns slowly and efficiently while charcoal burns. I attach the blower ash dump and firebrick. Because a coal forge isnt enclosed like most gas forges it can be easier to find the right position to heat your metal.
